Community Practice

Patient Criteria

  • Any patient population is acceptable.

Preceptor Criteria

  • Pharmacist with at least 2 years’ experience as a practicing pharmacist, with an active U.S. pharmacist license in good standing appropriate for site.
  • Actively participates in direct patient care using the PPCP and has access to the required patient populations.

Site Criteria

  • Community pharmacy where patients present to have prescriptions refilled and also make requests for self-care/herbals.
  • Site is committed to providing not only acute and chronic care management, but also disease prevention/wellness.
  • Site has sufficient available space so the pharmacist-preceptor and student can counsel/manage patients within a confidential setting.
  • Site offers and administers patient vaccinations according to Board of Pharmacy rules and regulations (preferred).

Required Course Activities

To achieve the learning objectives, students completing the Community Practice Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience should complete the following activities/assignments:

  1. Receive, interpret, and clarify prescription orders.
  2. Dispense prescriptions following state and federal rules and regulations.
  3. Complete a minimum of two Drug Utilization Review (DUR) Summaries for patients filling a new prescription.
  4. Provide self-care treatment recommendations, counseling, and appropriate follow-up for at least four patients.
  5. Provide treatment recommendations for herbal or dietary supplements, counseling, and appropriate follow-up for at least two patients.
  6. Proactively perform counseling for prescription medications which complies with current state/federal rules and regulations.
  7. Administer immunizations (where available and allowed by law), and provide appropriate patient education.
  8. Discuss with the preceptor, and participate when possible, in activities related to pharmacy management (personnel, inventory, scheduling, business management, etc).
  9. Participate in receiving drug orders and stocking medication on shelves.
  10. Spend time with the inventory specialist for the pharmacy, to learn how: a) to place an order; b) to receive an order; c) to handle drug shortages; and d) to handle drug recalls.
  11. Spend time with pharmacy management to gain an understanding of basic principles of pharmacy management and leadership, including pharmacist and technician supervision, hiring, scheduling, conflict resolution, and performance evaluation and review.
  12. Discuss with the preceptor, and participate when possible, in activities and documentation required for continuous quality improvement (CQI) by Florida law.
  13. Participate in the monthly controlled substance perpetual drug inventory.
